DIGITAL SKILLS TRAINING

People with disabilities must be included in society and given equal opportunities to participate in nation-building. The discussions that took place during the research also made it clear that more work needs to be done to empower people with disabilities and provide them with the necessary skills to increase their economic and social capital. Societies must work to make persons with disabilities feel included and offer equal opportunities for them to participate in nation building.

One critical insight that comes from this activity is the importance of sensitizing the general public on this issue. The discourse from the research also pointed to the necessity for further work on the empowerment of persons with disabilities and the provision of relevant skills to enhance their economic and social capital.

People with disabilities (PWD) are entitled to work on an equal premise with others and to take part in activities that are open, wide-ranging, and available. According to the population and housing census for 2021, PWDs make up 8% of the population in Ghana (i.e. 2,098,138 people).

According to estimates from the United Nations, between 80 and 90 percent of PWDs in developing nations who are of working age are unemployed. according to Ghanaian and global studies reports.

People with disabilities face a variety of obstacles to earning a living, our study and several other studies observed. This includes workplaces that are difficult to access, negative preconceptions, lack of opportunities for education, low utilization of government aid, and the quality of technological, vocational and training programmes (Bhatta et al., 2018).

Supporting individuals with disabilities to work is significant in providing income for economic sustainability. However, our research has additionally shown positive life altering events including increased confidence, economic wellbeing, gaining new skills and living and a fulfilling and dignified lifestyle.

This Programme offers a well-thought-out plan for free digital skills training for PWDs to help them live a fulfilling and dignified life. This is due to the fact that the objective of our intervention is to alleviate obstacles PWDs face in accessing digital skills and finding long-term employment or starting their own business.

  1. To ensure participants, regardless of their physical ability, have access to quality technical digital skills training.

  2. To ensure participants, regardless of their physical ability are permanently employed or supported to establish their own business of which they can work remotely.

  3. To provide our educators and employers with skills to plan their work environment in order for persons with disabilities to have reasonable space at work and have the appropriate tools to carry their task.

  4. To promote this initiative as an example to other stakeholders to encourage them to re-examine their strategies for supporting persons with disabilities.

  5. To create a tech space for knowledge exchange and support for educators and organisations providing for people with disabilities to share in best practices in working with persons with disabilities.

  6. To promote unity, dignity, fulfilling and good economic livelihood for people with disability to understand that there are equal opportunities for everyone, irrespective of physical abilities, gender, race, ethnicity, religion and age.

The use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) is increasing in the Ghanaian business community. Nowadays, electronic communication with customers is an essential part of most businesses. Technology is used by both the public and private sectors to carry out their day-to-day responsibilities to enhance operational efficiency, reduce operational costs, increase customer satisfaction.

Ghana’s business communities have benefited greatly from technology, as tech-savvy individuals are in high demand in both the public and private sectors.

Unfortunately, tech training content and materials are designed for able-bodied individuals, so many people with disabilities have not been able to take advantage of the opportunities presented by tech jobs. Also, a lot of PWDs in Ghana have not been able to use ICT facilities in a creative way to increase opportunities for entrepreneurship and its effectiveness.

Center of Abilities wants to set up free training modules and logistics that take into account PWDs’ limitations in order to make it easier for people with disabilities to get training in digital technology and find jobs. By making learning simpler, more exciting, and more effective, the training exercise aligns with PWD abilities. We are of the firm belief that providing PWDs with training will enable them to lead lives that are satisfying and fulfilling.

Training is defined in our “Tech Skills for PWD Programme” as: the practice of digital skills necessary for the job market through the use of assistive technology software and multimedia for students with special needs and disabilities.

The term “Assistive Technology” refers to computer software and specialized equipment that enables a person to improve the quality and consistency of their education or work. It is highly recommended for disabled individuals and those with chronic medical conditions.

At Center of Abilities, we seek to promote unity, dignity, fulfilling and good economic livelihood for young people, especially people with disabilities and young females for them to understand and appreciate that, there exist equal opportunities for everyone irrespective of Physically Abilities, Gender, Race, Ethnicity, Religion and Age.
